Retirement village resident’s alert sparks police response

An early morning call from a retirement village resident led police to investigate an alleged break-in at the Canberra complex.
About 3am on Friday, 31 July, a resident of a retirement village in Ainslie alerted police to an intruder in the basement car park.
Australian Federal Police officers arrived and found multiple storage cages with damaged locks and doors. Police allege they located 38-year-old Bradley Caine Anthony Dawson inside one of the storage cages.
He was arrested, and police allege a search of his belongings uncovered a knife, pry bar, gloves and other items they believe were intended for use in theft.
Dawson appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court later that day charged with two counts of unlawful possession of stolen property and one count each of burglary, going equipped for theft and possessing a knife without a reasonable excuse.
During the court appearance, the accused allegedly swore and attempted to throw a keyboard at a courtroom camera after a magistrate refused him bail.
