One hospitalised after Brisbane aged care facility fire

1 min read

One resident was hospitalised with smoke inhalation, and five assessed, following a fire at the Mandalay Retreat aged care facility in Cleveland, 29km east of the Brisbane CBD.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the morning at the home this week, was confined to a single room.

While paramedics were initially called on to examine 14 residents, ultimately only five needed assessment, as reported by the Courier Mail, and one was taken to Redland Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) had cleared Mandalay Retreat for fire safety at its evaluation in April this year.

“Fire evacuation diagrams and illuminated emergency exit signage were displayed and fire-fighting equipment was readily available.

“The Assessment Team were advised, and documentation evidenced, there were no outstanding fire defects at the time of the Assessment Contact,” the Commission’s report said.
