Privacy gone mad? QLD nursing home not warned new resident had killed de facto wife

1 min read

The Courier Mail is reporting Riverview Gardens Aged Care Plus Centre in Ipswich only discovered on March 16 that a resident who had been living there since August had stabbed his partner to death.

Denis Wakefield, 75, had killed Beth Staveley and tried to take his own life in June 2014.

He was charged with murder but was found in court to be of unsound mind and confined to a psychiatric hospital in Brisbane’s west.

But last year, he was accepted into the aged care facility, with the help of Queensland Health. The Salvation Army immediately moved him to an alternative location after being made aware of the crime.

The case raises serious questions about whether Queensland Health should have disclosed the information. West Moreton Hospital and Health Service told the paper it had to balance a patient’s treatment and privacy with community safety.
