QLD: Village and aged care residents fight plans to build nearby crematorium

1 min read

Around 300 residents from Palm Lake Resort Bethania and Waterford have gathered to protest plans by the James Family Funeral Trust for a two-storey crematorium nearby in Bethania, 35km southeast of Brisbane.

Bethania Residents Action Group president Diana Howes said there had been no community consultation and residents are worried about emissions, particularly as many of the aged care residents have respiratory problems.

Another resident also made the obvious point: siting the crematorium next to the aged care facility is in poor taste.

But a town planner acting for the James Family says the planned crematorium complies with council emission regulations – and this is where council wants to locate these kind of facilities.

The number of people aged over 65 in Queensland is predicted to grow by 354,000 by 2026, including over 70,000 in the Metro South area.
