Uniting opens new dementia care support unit at Canberra facility

The Not For Profit has built a third care house at its Amala aged care home in Gordon, 30km south of Canberra.

The expansion means the home now has capacity for 124 beds, with 40 beds in dementia-specific households.

Uniting employs a specialised ‘household model’ of care at the site, housing residents in smaller 18-20 capacity buildings.

Uniting Director of Property and Housing, Simon Furness says they’re pleased to provide further support for those living with dementia in the region.

“We see the household model of care as the centerpiece of our clinical approach that puts the dignity and wishes of our residents at its centre,” he added.
