Village Retirement Group adds school to new Queensland retirement village plan

The Village Retirement Group has applied to include an independent school, along with its previously announced retirement village, on the former award-winning North Lakes Golf Course in Moreton Bay, 26km north of Brisbane’s CBD.

Founded by Michael Harrison in 1979, The Village Retirement Group needs the approval of the Queensland Government to include a school on part of the 68-hectare course that closed two years ago. The Village Retirement Group said several independent education institutions had expressed interest in establishing a new school on the southern part of the site.

The Village Retirement Group Managing Director Justin Harrison said it was also preparing to lodge a development application for 243 low-rise independent living units and a single-storey 120-bed aged-care facility.

The golf course was part of the master planned Stockland estate, with hundreds of homes having frontage onto the fairways. Mr Harrison said he wanted to preserve most of the course as a public park with only a small proportion used as a retirement village development.

The Village Retirement Group owns and operates five Queensland communities in Coorparoo, Redcliffe, Taigum, Toowoomba, and Yeronga with more than 1,900 people residents. It is partnering with Anglicare Southern Queensland to build a new facility at Manly, on Brisbane’s Bayside.
