Shared rooms will be converted into individual rooms with ensuites.

The Not For Profit has begun refurbishing Hudson House in Cooma, a town 114km south of the national capital, Canberra.

The Stage 1 work, supported by $5 million in Commonwealth Government funding, will convert shared rooms into individual rooms with ensuites.

The project also includes a new wellbeing office, a purpose‑built hair salon and improvements to the central courtyard to create more functional and accessible outdoor spaces.

Sir William Hudson Memorial Centre, as it was known, was founded in 1982. Respect bought it in March 2023.

Stage 1 construction began in February 2026 and will be delivered in two stages to minimise disruption to residents and maintain continuity of care.

Stage 1 will take approximately seven to eight months to complete, weather permitting. Stage 2 will continue the long-term strategy Respect has developed for Hudson House and will see a new wing built with additional aged care beds. Stage 2 is expected to be completed by 2029.

Respect Managing Director and CEO Jason Binder.

Respect CEO and Managing Director, Jason Binder, said the investment reflects Respect’s commitment to strengthening aged care infrastructure in regional and rural communities.

“This redevelopment ensures the home continues to meet modern expectations for comfort, privacy and wellbeing, while supporting the long‑term needs of older people in the Snowy Monaro region,” Jason said.
