AstraZeneca refutes reports vaccine has low efficacy in seniors

1 min read

The British–Swedish multinational pharmaceutical company has denied media reports suggest the company’s vaccine is not effective for those over 65.

The vaccine has been the subject of intense scrutiny as Ireland joined France, Belgium and Germany among other European Union countries that have recommended against the vaccine for people aged over 65, due to a lack of tangible data from the age group.

AstraZeneca hit back at articles in German papers Handelsblatt and Bild, which reported the vaccine’s efficacy in people over the aged of 65 to be less than 8 and 10 per cent respectively.

In a statement, the company said reports were, “completely incorrect”.

This comes as Department of Health Secretary, Professor Brendan Murphy defended the vaccine in an appearance on ABC’s 7.30, saying he would be “very pleased to have it”.
