A new centre of excellence for the complex care of older people is taking shape on Sydney’s North Shore.

HammondCare CEO Andrew Thorburn and Hindmarsh Chief Executive Officer Rowan Hindmarsh have formally launched the start of construction of HammondCare Greenwich.

Demolition of the old 72-bed Greenwich Hospital is nearing completion and will be followed by bulk excavation works in coming months.

Andrew, who took part in a sod-turning ceremony on 24 June alongside representatives from builder Hindmarsh, said HammondCare was creating what would become the Not For Profit’s flagship development.

He said Australia’s growing ageing population will mean more people living longer with chronic health conditions, including dementia, and more developments like HammondCare Greenwich will be needed.

“This will be a place where people can receive care in one community, no matter how their needs change,” Andrew said.
“This is a significant investment for HammondCare and will shape how we deliver care here for years to come.”

The redeveloped HammondCare Greenwich will feature a new sub-acute hospital with specialist services including inpatient and outpatient palliative care and a headquarters for research initiative, Hammond Innovations.

There will also be Supported Seniors Living apartments designed to cater to older couples seeking support services.

Also included on the redeveloped Greenwich Hospital site will be residential aged care accommodation for people living with dementia.

Work will begin on the two Supported Seniors Living buildings offering 89 apartments this year with completion expected mid-2028.

The Health and Community buildings are expected to be delivered by the end of 2028.

Also attending the ceremony for HammondCare were Chief Financial Officer Rory Crout, Healthcare & Hospitals General Manager Felicity Burns, and General Manager Property & Capital Works Michael Cooney.

Representing Hindmarsh were National Construction Manager David Last, NSW Construction Manager Brad Mason, National Business Development Manager Glen Cowdrey, and Project Director Mark Reynolds.

Project manager TSA Riley was represented by NSW Aged Care Sector Lead Claire Evans, Project Director Alex Lisney, and Project Manager Moon Kang.

During construction, Greenwich Hospital’s services will continue from alternative HammondCare locations.

Inpatient palliative care services are being delivered at Neringah Hospital in Wahroonga, while Older People’s Mental Health services continue at HammondCare Riverglen (Building 50) at Macquarie Hospital. Ambulatory and outpatient healthcare services remain available at HammondCare Pacific Centre in St Leonards.
