New 91-unit Muslim retirement village with co-located aged care coming to Brisbane

Brisbane’s first Muslim retirement village and residential aged care facility is set to be built on the site of the city’s new Islamic Centre after receiving Council approval.

Sukoon Village – from an Arabic word meaning “Peace” or “Tranquillity” – will comprise 91 two- and three-bedroom retirement units, 20 aged care units and 10 dementia support units, as well as a medical centre and a childcare centre.

According to the Brisbane Islamic Centre, the village will serve the needs of the Muslim community while being open to members of other religions as well.

“In the mid-2000s, a group of like-minded individuals recognised the lack of any retirement or aged care facility specifically catering to the spiritual and culinary needs of the Muslim community.

“From these seeds of inspiration, the concept plans were commissioned and Sukoon Village – a facility to cater for our community, whilst open to residents of all faiths – was born,” the organisation said.

Construction is underway on the mosque and community centre which will form the first stage of the project; the village will be part of stage two.
