Uniting Communities’ U City is first carbon neutral whole building in SA

1 min read

Uniting Communities’ 20-storey U City development, a mix of retirement living, accessible accommodation, social services hub, function centre, serviced apartments and community spaces, plus restaurant and café, is the first whole building in South Australia to be carbon neutral.

The Not For Profit achieved a Carbon Neutral Certification and a 5 Star Green Performance Rating from the Green Building Council of Australia and the Australian Government’s Climate Active program.

“Our retirement village residents and our tenants are proud to occupy a building that is leading the way in environmental sustainability, and they’re willing to do their bit to ensure we leave as small a footprint as possible in our daily lives at U City,” said Uniting communities Chief Executive Simon Schrapel.

To become carbon neutral, Simon said carbon offsets had been bought and retired to cover the whole of the mixed-use U City building in Adelaide’s CBD, and Uniting Communities had provided a commitment to offset the building’s carbon emissions for 10 years.
