Alert for aged care operators: new requirements for police checks for staff and volunteers start 1 July

1 min read

Previously, applicants only had to submit 100 points of ID to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC).

Now the ACIC has ruled four documents will be required from applicants to meet the minimum proof of identity:

  • One commencement of identity document;
  • One primary use in the community document;
  • Two secondary use in the community documents; and
  • Plus one certified photo if none of the documents above contains a photo.

An identity document can also only be used once and applicants must supply all four required documents from the three mandatory categories – and applicants without documents such as a passport or birth certificate may be caught out.

ACIC has also mandated all accredited agencies that conduct checks must have new contracts in place with their clients – if you are a provider, it’s worth checking your contract to make sure it is up-to-date.

ACIC recommends everyone completing a police check have their identity documents checked by the Document Verification Service (DVS) which is run by the Department of Home Affairs. PharmacyID is a Gateway Service Provider for the DVS.

ACIC also requires applicants must be sighted at some stage of the process – PharmacyID provides face-to-face verification at PharmacyID pharmacies throughout Australia.
