Key points
  • Approval granted: 46 new retirement living units approved at Myrtle Bank
  • New pathway: Among first projects under SA’s Accommodation Diversity reforms
  • Integrated precinct: Expansion complements existing village and aged care home
  • Heritage revival: Historic Carmelite Monastery to become a community hub

South Australia’s State Commission Assessment Panel has green lit the addition of two retirement living towers on the co-located site.

Southern Cross Care (SA, NT & VIC)’s application is one of the first to be filed under the state’s new Accommodation Diversity Code Amendment and associated Significant Retirement Facility and Supported Accommodation Sites Overlay, which was introduced in October last year.

The retirement living development, a seven-storey tower and a four-storey building linked by a lower ground level car park with 94 spaces, will house 46 independent living units on 19,416sqm of land adjacent to the existing Carmelite precinct in Myrtle Bank, 3.7km southeast of Adelaide’s CBD.

Designed by Walter Brooke Architecture, the buildings will sit adjacent to the village’s existing Stage 1, a five-storey building on the corner of Cross Road and Spence Avenue.

The Carmelite precinct already comprises 38 Independent Living Units, a two-storey 73-bed aged care home, and a Health and Fitness Centre.

Southern Cross Care (SA, NT & VIC), which is the largest Not For Profit aged care and retirement living provider based in South Australia, also has approval to revitalise the single-storey, State heritage-listed Carmelite Monastery that housed Adelaide’s Catholic archbishops until 1935.

The Monastery will be used as a community coterie hub with landscaping incorporating new walkways and outdoor spaces.
