How smart technology helped reduce falls and support better clinical care
In this interview, June, Clinical Manager at Yukana Aged Care, explains how smart technology helped reduce resident falls by 72% while supporting better clinical decision-making.
In this interview, June Shun, Clinical Manager at Yukana Aged Care, shares how smart technology is helping improve resident safety, reduce falls and support better clinical decision-making. With more than 50 years of nursing experience, she explains why technology should enhance clinical care - not replace it.
One of the most significant outcomes has been a reduction in overnight falls. June describes how one resident, who had previously experienced an average of eight falls each month, saw that number decrease by 72% after the introduction of Talius and SleepSense. For residents, families and care teams, the improvement provided greater confidence and peace of mind.
June also explains how real-time sleep monitoring allows staff to check on residents without unnecessarily disturbing them. By understanding whether a resident is sleeping, awake or beginning to move, care teams can respond more appropriately while preserving dignity, improving sleep quality and reducing the risk of falls.
While the technology provides valuable insights, June is clear that it is not a replacement for professional judgement. Instead, it strengthens clinical governance by giving nurses better information to support timely decisions and deliver safer, more personalised care.
