NZ retirement villages set to be fast tracked thanks to special COVID-19 legislation

The development of a 100-unit Winton Property Group retirement village in Wanaka, New Zealand, is being fast tracked thanks to special COVID-19 legislation passed by the Government.

The COVID-19 (fast-track consenting) Act 2020 has allowed for early approval for referral of the Northbrook Wānaka Retirement Village, despite the Environmental Protection Authority not yet receiving an application, the Wanaka Sun reported.

A spokesperson for Environment Minister David Parker said consent for the development would have been slowed if “the company sought consent through the Resource Management Act standard processes”.

Once approved the development is also expected to create up to 700 jobs during the duration of construction.

The Winton Property Group currently have 10 retirement community projects in various stages of development, sales and completion across New Zealand.
