RetireAustralia walks away from Ashgrove golf club village deal

1 min read

As we reported in September 2016, the Brisbane-based operator was proposing to build 154 units across three buildings at the Ashgrove Golf Club in The Gap, 8km west of the Brisbane CBD.

The project was to include an underground car park and new clubhouse, which the Club president John Shaw was hailing the project a lifeline, given the club’s financial future was in real jeopardy.

Alison Quinn, RetireAustralia CEO (pictured), as reported in the Courier Mail, said they were walking away because of the development changes in the Brisbane City Council policies.

“We had expected to have the support of Council’s planning amendments to encourage retirement and aged care development. In the current environment, without incentive to co-locate retirement development on privately owned sport and rec land, the commercial risk of continuing is too high”.

Brisbane Council has backed down from supporting sporting club land to be used for retirement living following the actions of multiple local advocacy groups arguing open space should not be ‘lost’.

RetireAustralia points out their development would only encroach on 2.1% of the club’s total area.
