Smoking ceremony for Ryman Healthcare’s $200M retirement village in Mulgrave, Melbourne

The New Zealand-based continuum of care operator is not messing around to ensure its latest village in Mulgrave sees its first residents move in late next year.

Ryman Healthcare was given planning approval in November last year, less than 10 months after permit requests were lodged.

Now it has held a smoking ceremony and welcome to country before a sod ceremony celebration at the site, 25km southeast of Melbourne’s CBD.

Wurundjeri man and traditional owner Uncle Colin Hunter led the ceremony, attended by Ryman Healthcare Australia CEO Cameron Holland, and staff from the company's development, sales, marketing, and construction teams.

The continuum of care village in Melbourne’s southeast will include 105 independent living apartments and 70 independent living villas, as well as 54 serviced apartments and a 60-bed care centre with high, low, and specialist dementia care offerings.

When finished, it will have capacity for around 300 residents, and will feature amenities including an all-weather bowling green, heated indoor swimming pool, café, hair and beauty salon and cinema.
